Different types of omega-3 fatty acid:

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), categorized as a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid, is derived from oily fish and seafood such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel. These sources are known to contain EPA.


Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)

There is another variant of omega-3 found in certain plant oils, such as soybean and flaxseed oils. This particular type of omega-3 is also present in black walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and chia seeds. Plant-based sources like these offer a different type of omega-3 compared to the ones found in fish and seafood.

Reducing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis

According to a study conducted in 2020, there is evidence to suggest that omega-3 fatty acids could potentially play a role in decreasing autoimmune inflammatory reactions associated with rheumatoid arthritis.


Reducing triglyceride levels

Triglycerides, which are a form of fat found in the bloodstream, are produced by the body and obtained through dietary intake. In order to reduce elevated levels of triglycerides that could potentially contribute to heart disease, physicians often recommend omega-3 supplementation. Interestingly, despite the commonly held belief, a comprehensive review conducted in 2018 failed to establish any connection between omega-3 supplements and the development of heart disease.


Reducing the risk of postpartum depression 

According to a trusted 2018 review, the use of EPA supplements during pregnancy and the postpartum period was shown to alleviate certain symptoms associated with postpartum depression. Additionally, DHA supplements were found to lower the risk of developing postpartum depression. However, it is important to note that further research is necessary to substantiate these assertions.


Lowering stroke risk

As per a report from 2016, it was indicated that omega-3s could potentially lower the risk of ischemic strokes. However, the researchers did not discover any evidence to support the notion that omega-3s reduce the risk of all types of strokes.
